Wedding Speeches 2021 … Long or Short ?

Wedding videographer Kilkenny

Over the years in the videography business here in Kilkenny and Tipperary  I have heard it all, with wedding speeches anyway!  I remember 15 years ago at weddings, the Smokey hotel function rooms and the speeches that were short and to the point. As time went on the smoking ban arrived and the speeches got longer & longer for some reason.

weddingvideokilkenny.comHow long is a good speech? Well I guess the way to answer that is how long in a piece of string… who knows, but the attention span of your guests should not be over looked.  The total duration of the wedding speeches is usually 20 to 30 minutes max.  If you want your wedding speeches to be short, then you have to make sure all the speakers know their limits and no more.  Long speeches can risk  repetition and guest boredom and I have see this while videoing weddings all over Ireland.

My advice to couples that ask about what I think regarding speeches is this: I tell them it’s their day but just to be aware a short speech is always remembered and spoken about later, a long speech is soon forgotten because it was too much for people to take in.  Also bear in mind that if the speeches are after the meal and are long winded, people get fed up as they need to stretch their legs.  I have heard horror comments after the speeches from guests after sitting for nearly an hour listening to a guy that “loves his own voice!” but as I emphasise – it’s your day and your speeches. The traditional scenario of having the speeches after the meal is fine as well, but think of the groom & best man and also the dads  all  sitting there eating their meal thinking the speeches have to be done soon – it can and will put them off their meal.

A trend that is becoming increasingly popular is to have the wedding speeches before the meal. This really helps people who have a speech to deliver and are somewhat anxious about making it. This will have to be  arranged with your hotel in advance so that they can  Plan to accommodate it with your meal.

drinks at wedding

I understand with hotels they have to keep the meal hot while the wedding speeches are being conducted, but from feedback from couples 70% now want their speeches before the meal. This way all involved in the speaking  can relax and enjoy their meal knowing it’s done and dusted! It’s a great idea for  people that are not used to public speaking. Of course from the hotel’s side of things this can be a nightmare! Also you band can start on time if all is done and dusted before say 9pm, and this way you get value for money from you nights Entertainment as well. The bride and groom tell the hotel they will only be 15 minutes but I have see this 15 mins drag on to an hour!  The poor chef is doing his best to stop the veg from sticking to the pans, so i can understand why the hotels frown on this!  If your speeches are going to be before the meal tell the hotel this and stay to an agreed time-frame – this way your guests won’t be eating cold food and all will be happy. Brand new blog in the making for next week, very interesting one at that!  check back   ~  Joe

Great local wedding

Last week I had the pleasure of filming a lovely fun wedding for a family I know very well,  John and Tess Ryan (Bob).  Their lovely daughter  Aoife  married Frank Cussen from Galbally in Oola Church.  I called to Aoife’s house to capture the excitement on the morning – the usual stuff, hair, make up, more hair and more make up, and that was only her dad and the the lads!  But seriously it was great to film all the fun of the girls getting ready- it’s a lovely start to a wedding DVD.  Earlier in the week I had done a little bit of filming  with Frank to get his thoughts on his upcoming wedding and on the morning  of the wedding  Aoife spoke her thoughts on camera and I mixed the two together to make the lovely clip you will see below.

Wedding Video Kilkenny weddings bridesAs I mentioned, Oola Church was my next stop.   What a huge amount of friends they have, guests from Galbally, Cashel and all over the world turned up!  The ceremony was conducted by Fr. Jack O’Neill and when Aoife and Frank were married we moved on to Aoife’s granny’s house, a lovely farm setting with the old milking steps providing a lovely backdrop for the photo session.

Wedding Video Kilkenny weddings bridesAoife and Frank had thought of every thing, with green wellies for the lads and flowery ones for the girls!  Their photographers captured some great photos here and I got some lovely footage.

Wedding Video Kilkenny weddings bridesThe Bunratty Castle Hotel was our last stop for the day.  Aoife and Frank arrived soon after me – I like to try and get to the reception venue before the bride and groom to film the drinks reception so they can see what was happening elsewhere on their day.  The function room in the hotel is splendid and looked fabulous on the day. The wedding cake was fantastic and the speeches were excellent – funny, emotional, and just the right length.  One of the highlights of the day for the lads was when both mothers sang “The Voyage” together after the speeches; it sounded fabulous so well done to the mams for that!

Their entertainment for the night was “The Seducers” band  and they had the huge crowd rocking the night away.

Wedding Video Kilkenny weddings bridesI’d like to wish Aoife and Frank congratulations on their marriage, and all the best for the years to come.

So if your planing on getting married in, 2017 / 2018/ 2019,   give me a call and lets chat about YOUR wedding because I get booked very early!

Clonmel Park Hotel

Clonmel Park HotelA lot of couples have asked me to review more hotels along my travels as an award winning wedding videographer covering Tipperary, Kilkenny, Waterford and Carlow, so this week it’s  the turn of the Clonmel Park Hotel.  I have filmed lots of weddings in this hotel in Clonmel, and over the years have found it to be a fantastic hotel for weddings.  I see upon arriving at the hotel that the red carpet is always at hand – it’s not rolled out too early so as to keep it clean, but when the bridal car arrives it’s all hands on deck and out goes the carpet nice and fresh and clean.

Clonmel Park Hotel | Wedding video Kilkenny

The couple are greeted with a champagne reception on arrival and of course some fresh strawberries.  I have always found the staff very friendly, polite and extremely helpful to all, including myself as a videographer in the course of my evenings work there.

The couple are taken into the function room to see and give their approval of the seating and the details that have been placed on tables etc. Then it’s time for the photographer to set up the mock cutting of the cake – this is done at this time so that it’s a controlled and relaxed shoot. When this is done the couple are brought into the foyer of the hotel or the room that has been reserved for the couple and their guests to enjoy some much needed tea, coffee, and the fabulous food. I have always noticed there is no shortage of food at this time!

Clonmel Park Hotel | Wedding video KilkennyAny photos that need to be taken at this time can be completed before the meal, where there is a lovely stair case should the day be wet or cold. Another great hotel for the calling on time for dinner, this something some hotels slip on! but the Clonmel Park Hotel.  is ahead on this.

Clonmel Park Hotel | Wedding video KilkennyThe guests are called promptly to the function room where i notice there is never a mix up of tables or names ( well done on this ) as its some thing to add stress to a brides day! again the hotel has no problem having speeches before the meal, very important for the nervous  speaker, again some thing where other hotels wont allow speeches before the meal, well if it was my wedding I  would be saying i am paying enough for the hotel and I wish to have the speeches before the meal end of story.

Any photos that need to be taken at this time can be completed before the meal, and the hotel have a lovely stair case should the day be wet or cold. Another great hotel for calling guests in good time for dinner – this is something some hotels slip up on but the Clonmel Park Hotel is on the ball here!

Over the years and having been part of many weddings in the Clonmel Park Hotel I have not heard of an unsatisfied guest at  a wedding there.  From what I see on the day (and we wedding videographers don’t miss much!)  the service is fast and friendly, and I must say I always find there to be a very good turn round of the function room for the nights entertainment.  And any couple that I have worked with at the Clonmel Park Hotel have been entirely satisfied with their experience there – and isn’t that the most important thing!

“Typical Irish Weather”

“Typical Irish Weather” How to Deal with Rain on your Wedding Day

Wedding Video Kilkenny
Wedding Video Kilkenny

Your wedding day is without doubt one of the biggest days of your life, if not the biggest. However, there’s one thing which can spoil it and that’s the unpredictable Irish weather, particularly in areas such as Tipperary, Kilkenny, Carlow and Waterford.

Whatever you do, don’t let a rainy day put a dampener on your start to married life. For all you blushing brides and dashing grooms out there, here are just a few tips to stop the typical Irish weather from spoiling your big day.

Preparation is key

Of course there is nothing you can do to prevent the rain but there are a few steps you can take to prepare for it. Unfortunately everywhere in Ireland is susceptible to high rainfall, even beautiful wedding location such as Tipperary and Kilkenny. As a famous Cork man once said, “ fail to prepare, prepare to fail”, never is this more true than on your wedding day.
Here are a few steps you can take to prepare properly for the day you tie the knot.

Check the weather forecast well in advance and advise your guests

Wedding Video Kilkenny

It’s your special day so people won’t mind a bit of rain but do give them some warning if possible. If there’s a high chance of it bucketing down, let your guest know so they can dress accordingly. The last thing you want is all your friends and family drowned to the bone with no umbrellas or jackets to be seen.

Relax and embrace it

Try to relax and not get worked up. This may not sound like great advice but a wedding day is stressful enough without having the added worry of the weather to think about. Just take a few deep breaths, remind yourself that there was always a possibility of rain and embrace it. Try to imagine the raindrops being the perfect backdrop to your special day rather than something that spoils it. It wouldn’t be Ireland without a bit of rain, right?

Trust the experts

Wedding Videographers | Kilkenny 2015

A rainy wedding certainly isn’t ideal but the professionals that you hire for the day will have covered hundreds of weddings in all manner of conditions so trust them to do a great job regardless of the weather.

Videography professionals such as Abbey Video Productions are used to working in all weather conditions in locations like Tipperary, Kilkenny, Carlow and Waterford. They will be well prepared and able to confidently handle any challenges that the weather may present.

Have a Plan B

If your guests are getting soaked and you can’t stand another second of having an umbrella hovering over your head for the entire day then perhaps it is time to head inside. Try to ensure that your venue has an indoor area that you would be happy to use as the backdrop for your photographs and videography. After all, it is one thing to embrace the rain, but it’s another thing entirely to be getting soaked to the skin and rained on for the entirety of your big day. If there is an indoor alternative at the venue then do ensure it is ready for use if necessary.

It’s all about the bride and groom

Just remember it is your special day and the only thing that your guests and the professionals such as the musicians, the Abbey Video Productions team and the venue staff want is to see is the bride and groom enjoying it. Do your best to be thorough in your preparations and you will definitely have a day to remember.

Civil ceremonies In Kilkenny – Kilshane House

Civil ceremonies In Kilkenny and all over Ireland have become very popular in recent times. As a popular wedding videographer here in Tipperary and Kilkenny  I am well acquainted with filming civil ceremonies and  civil partnerships, so a visit to  Kilshane House for a civil ceremony  near Tipperary Town lately was just another day at the office for me but a very special day for Cora and Ivan. They were a lovely couple and fantastic to work with from start to finish.  Here is a clip from their day in Kilshane house.

Cora and Ivan celebrated their wedding day with a large number of family and friends at Kilshane.  I am sure that all Tipperary videographers would agree that for a  civil ceremony, Kilshane is Tipperary’s Number One venue.

This fantastic hotel will give you all you need and more.  It is an elegant and spacious Regency house built in 1822 situated at the end of a half-mile long driveway. It is the centre-piece of 320 acres of private parkland which includes a trout river, a remarkable Victorian landscaped garden with a man-made lake, huge noble trees, grassy expanses and the unique Tipperary sky. A large and handsome conservatory circa 1860 is ideal for a glass or two of champagne, or a champagne reception under glass. Enjoy an intimate dinner in a private room off the Conservatory… or an elegant dinner in the formal dining room…or fine dining on a grand scale in the Orangerie.

This Wedding story began with Cora getting ready at the hotel the morning of their wedding, on one of  our few sunny days this year. The Hotel makes you feel relaxed the moment you come through their doors.  After the ceremony the photo session took place in the grounds of this great house, which  has a beautiful lake situated half way up the drive.  It is  ideal for wedding footage and photos alike.  It was a pleasure to have been asked to be part of their wedding day, and as I have filmed lots of weddings in the hotel I know all the nice areas to capture a couple’s day in style

Kilshane House Weddings - wedding Video Kilkenny & Tipperary
Kilshane House Weddings – wedding Video Kilkenny & Tipperary

With this lovely couple we went to the lake for their wedding shoot.  It was an abundance of colour with  wild flowers and trees, and the old boat house in the background made for some great footage as you will see in the clip. They were a lovely relaxed couple and really enjoyed their photographs being taken, which makes it easier for  us all!  As with all wedding videos it’s at this time that we get the time to be creative and make the couple’s DVD something to stand out from the rest.  I really enjoy trying new angles and exposure to bring out the best in the location as again you will see in the clip

Editing was so much fun on this wedding as I had loads of fantastic footage to work with, from start to finish.  Again, this is very inportant when filming a wedding as it really gives me so much more to chose from – one thing I don’t like is to scrimp on footage, after all it’s YOUR day.

It’s Summer-time!

Kilkenny weddings Summer-time
Kilkenny weddings and its Summer-time

It’s finally feeling like Summer-time, and I must confess as a wedding videographer here in Kilkenny, this is one of my favourite times of the year. In terms of filming, I am given much greater scope for filming the outdoors. Filming is made easier by the fact that the bridal party can spill out into the grounds of their wedding venue, at ease and relaxed in the summer heat. I pride myself on filming my wedding parties in a discreet manner, a skill I have been working on for years. When the wedding guests come out into the sunshine, they relax and my job is made that little bit easier and even more pleasurable. When the sun shines, everyone unwinds, their shoulders drop, and they smile and enjoy the day that little bit more. The extra hours of sunlight also mean I have a bigger window to obtain great footage.

Get ready for 2016

Naturally, summer-time is my busiest time of year. If you’ve recently become engaged, now is a great time to start making preparations if you intend to marry in summer 2016. My diary for next year is filling up quickly, so I think it’s best to prepare as much in advance as possible, which will also minimise stress during preparations. Competition for venues and churches is greatest at this time of year, so you will need to start putting plans and ideas together, and make bookings soon. It may seem obvious to most but here are a few great reasons for booking a summer wedding for 2016.
                                                             Let’s Go Outside!

New Park Hotel Kilkenny
New Park Hotel Kilkenny

In recent years I’ve watched many young couples make the most of the summer weather by moving their celebrations outdoors. This is a great way to keep expenses down and can create a wonderfully relaxed and casual feel to the day. Despite it being summer-time, our weather in Ireland is not always dependable. However, having a wedding in summer-time can give you greater freedom in terms of choosing a wedding venue. Outdoor weddings are still not licensed in Ireland, but if you are having a civil ceremony at a hotel or registered venue, you may consider venturing into the grounds of the venue for the entire reception or once the meal and speeches have ended. Summer-time can give you greater creative freedom in terms of choosing a venue. Most hotels will have maintained their gardens well and at this time of year they will be in full bloom and looking their best.

                                                            A garden wedding

Wedding video Kilkenny
Wedding video Kilkenny

I’ve filmed wonderful family weddings held in the grounds belonging to the bride’s parents. Marquees are becoming increasingly popular and can be borrowed or rented and erected in the back garden. This works particularly well for smaller weddings and is a great way to help keep your wedding under budget. The only possible downside is that the party can go on until the small hours of the morning! And with all that space, you’ll easily be able to accommodate your evening guests as well. When planning your garden, don’t forget you’ll need a generator and lights for the evening-time!

Summer weddings

                                                                                                                                                    More Guests
Summer-time weddings tend to have a greater turn-out. More of your guests will be free to book time off work and they will be booking time off work anyway. The kids will off school, so families won’t be tied to the school calendar either. Family members who are living abroad are more likely to travel for a summer wedding and will make the trip their summer vacation. So you will have greater freedom to choose a week-day for your wedding and be less restricted to choosing a Saturday.

Get Creative!

Wedding Video | Butler House
Wedding Video | Butler House

Having your reception outdoors can put your creativity to the test. Recently I filmed a wedding reception in a marquee and the bride had decorated the inside with bunches of flowers called baby’s breath, Bristol fairy, or its proper name – Gypsphila. This delicate flower has been popular for as long as I can remember, but now more than ever it has become extremely popular – now it is used for bouquets and centre-pieces simply on its own. The result was fabulous and an inexpensive option. Summer weddings have a much larger colour palette and so give great freedom of expression in terms of colour – summer wedding really pop with colour, usually the brighter and bolder the better. I’ve also noticed brides and grooms becoming more creative over the summer months by wearing outfits slightly less conventional, for example – brightly coloured evening shoes and jewellery for the bride and coloured braces for the groom.

Great video and photos

The summer weather means, we can travel together to great locations for filming after the ceremony and with our incredible landscapes here in Tipperary, we really our spoiled so we should make the most of them. I’ve filmed some beautiful scenes of the married couple walking through a meadow or down a path beside a stream. These are only a few of ideas for filming during summer! If you want to discuss your wedding ideas for filming your wedding, please get in touch and we can have a chat. If you would like to know more about choosing a wedding videographer you can read more about what I do here.
Best of luck with your wedding plans! ~ Joe

Churches in Kilkeny
Churches in Kilkenny

Throughout my career as a wedding videographer in Kilkenny, I have had the pleasure of filming and witnessing many poignant and emotional wedding ceremonies. Certain details from the day may remain with me and stand out in my memory, such as a sincerely spoken prayer or blessing. When I see the guests are silent, contemplative, with heads bowed down in the many Kilkenny Churches as they listen intently, I sense how the prayer has struck a chord, helping to bring everyone together in thought for that moment.

Traditional Irish prayers and blessings can help bring this quality of intimacy to yourwedding ceremony. And as they are traditional they are also loaded with nostalgia. Perhaps the guests will remember their grandparents saying them long ago, and hearing them again will evoke old memories.

Your choice of prayers and blessings is your opportunity to personalise and bring greater meaning to your ceremony. Choosing a favourite blessing from a grandparent or loved one who may not be present creates a thoughtful and heart-felt expression of remembrance for your ceremony. (The very last blessing is the most famous and also a personal favourite of mine). And of course I can capture all of these wonderful moments as I film your wedding. With my small, compact camera and zoom lens, I can capture these moments close up for you to cherish and remember your wedding day for many years to come.

Wedding Video Bookings for 2016 and 2017  are pouring in the last few days. Even January this year  was as busy as last July and that’s booked out fully again this year!  It’s something I have never encountered before but is great to see. Even  2017  is well booked. Throughout the year, I have had to recommend some well heeled colleagues of mine to brides for whom I was booked for their date. If I am booked, I don’t just send them a name of the first  videographer that springs to mind. I have a few professional guys that I hold in the highest regard and we always recommend each other, should one of us be booked. With this way of working, no couple will get the run around with different prices. I would never recommend someone I would not use my self.

I have made the big decision to change over to a top of the range  MAC. After a lot of research, I have  learned that, together, MAC and the new editing software will both provide even more fantastic results to my editing work. It will also make my turn around time even better. I got some fantastic news early this morning when I was informed I had reached the finals of the Mrs2Be Brides’ Choice Awards 2015 ( Recognising the best of the Irish wedding industry)! But as I said in an earlier blog it it’s not the winning for me … it would be nice, don’t get me wrong, but every wedding video I film whether it be in Tipperary, Kilkenny, Carlow or any of the multitude of other locations I attend, I always give it 110%.  Every bride and groom has different ideas for their wedding video, it may be the music they choose or the way they want it filmed – each couple is unique.  So when i am booked for a wedding I put a lot of planning into it well before the day, this way from the bride’s house to the first dance I know what’s expected of me – after all, it’s their day.

The guests arriving is a very important part of filming as this is something the bride only gets to see on DVD later.  The music in the church, the service, the vows, the walk down the aisle as husband & wife – these are all key points. With regards to the music in the Church, I like to leave a wireless microphone or a professional voice recorder near the musicians  to capture the audio 100%.  Sound is just as important as picture, this is why I always use a wireless mic or voice recorder discreetly placed in the groom’s pocket to pick up the vows and this is removed right away outside the door after the ceremony.  The greeting line is a great way to formally meet your guests after the wedding. The bride’s house is a great place to start filming, with all the make-up and the hair being done it can be great fun.  It’s a part of the day the groom doesn’t get to see so it’s nice for him to be able to view this later on their finished wedding DVD.  The groom’s house sometimes gets filmed but this all depends on timing on the day, as i like to be at the ceremony location one hour before it starts – this time is needed to film the location, the flowers and all the little details in the Church or room where the ceremony is taking place.

The photograph session is a fantastic opportunity for me to capture some great video footage.  I don’t just film what the photographer is doing but more of a candid covering of the bridal party and their families if they are there as well. If not I will capture them at the hotel. I enjoy filming the guests discreetly in the hotel enjoying the drinks reception, this way i get a great chance to catch up with some late-comers!  From there on I film the speeches, which lately tend to take place before the meal – it’s nice to relax and enjoy your meal once they are over and done with!  The dancing is filmed discreetly with no light if possible or just a small light on the camera if I need it.  Your wedding will end with a highlights chapter looking back over your day.
We have often been complimented on our turn-around time – we try to have the finished product ready when the couple return from honeymoon. I have read and heard of other couples not receiving their wedding DVDs for months, this can happen where only one person is working on a project and gets snowed under. It doesn’t end there… now the hard work starts!  The editing can take two days to to complete, but my wife Breda is a pro at this: various effects, titles, adding music, authoring and chaptering the final product, testing design sleeves for the covers of the boxes and the art work on the discs – it’s easy to see where two days goes here!

On a final note, getting back to the Mrs2Be Brides’ Choice Awards 2015, I would like to wish all the Finalists the very best of luck. kilkenny wedding venues
