Over the years how things has changed ….

Hi all, and welcome to this month’s wedding blog. I’m Joe at Abbey Video Productions.

When I started wedding videos here in Tipperary and Kilkenny, the cameras were BIG with a large cassette in. Thankfully, those times have passed and technology has moved on. My new cameras are Sony pxw- x180s. These cameras are so easy to carry, are lightweight and have much more flexibility. They are also much less obtrusive which is very important on a wedding day.

The use of SxS mem cards means less storage space is needed, and drop out from the old VHS tapes are long gone. HIGH quality is very important to me as a videographer here in Tipperary and Kilkenny, along with low lighting. Capability is a must, as no one likes a video light; again these days are gone.

Editing systems : Where do I start? And do you really need to know all the technology of it? Probably not! But let me give you a quick overview. I use two editing systems — Vegas Pro 13 and, of course, the old faithful Pinnacle Studio 14 HD for smaller projects. The editing system is only as good as the camera person: If your shots are not framed right or are shaky, no editing system will fix it 100%. So that’s where expertise in filming comes into play. But, of course, what’s a wedding video without a few nice, gentle special effects. That being said, I don’t like to overdo them, as they look tacky. I have seen some wedding videos with butterflies floating around the screen, or some gold dust falling over the bride as she walks in a park … tacky!

Whats new out there I hear you ask:

Well its not new, but Flash drives with your full wedding along with chapters have now been in for a while I have delivered some weddings on them and the quality is fantastic, but not every household has a TVs with a flash drive slot so the good old DVD is here for a while yet, but the Flash drives will soon be our main format for delivery The reason is that it will allow us to supply your wedding footage in broadcast high definition quality, all my weddings are recorded with the very latest Sony pxw- x180 cameras so its time to make the change and let couples really enjoy better than 100% quality.

While I am based in Tipperary, but I also have a huge clientele in Kilkenny, Carlow, Waterford, Wexford, and everywhere around Ireland, really you could find me anywhere.

Tipperary is, of course, my local area and I love local weddings. It’s great to be asked back to film a wedding for a family that I have all ready worked for. That’s ‘word of mouth’ and the BEST way to do business. Kilkenny is my next area, as it was in the Kilkenny/Carlow area that I filmed one of my first weddings. Only last week, I was in Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow with the reception in Mount Wolseley but, as I said, I love to film. Light up Letters, the Latest Trend at Irish weddings

Over the years of filming wedding videos all over Ireland, trends come and go, from the Chocolate Fountain, the sweet cart and now, Light up Letters these letters can say anything you wish, from welcoming your guests to your wedding, to the all important word LOVE .For all couples, their wedding day is a unique and memorable occasion. No matter how many weddings they may go to as guests, no day will ever be as amazing as theirs.

However for guests, a lot of weddings that they go to can feel pretty similar and not that unique at all. Now on one hand, this isn’t really an issue for prenuptial couples to worry about as it’s their special day after all, but how can they help to make the day just as memorable for their guests as it is for them? At many Irish weddings these days as I have seen in areas like Tipperary, Kilkenny, Carlow and Waterford there is a growing trend of light up letters taking centre stage in the function room. and yes it look great!These dazzling displays are proving to be a wonderful addition to many weddings across Ireland and for videography companies like Wedding Videographers Kilkenny there are no problems capturing the magnificence of these lights and incorporating them into the wedding videos that I produce for happy couples.

The light up letters come in a range of sizes so for couples who are looking for a discreet display there are small options available which are ideal for the top table at the wedding meal. However for the bride and groom who really want to dazzle their guests, large light up letters which are ideal for placing at the front of the dance floor are being more commonly hired in many parts of Ireland, including Tipperary and Kilkenny.
These larger letters are approximately 5 ft tall so they’re certainly big enough to be easily seen but not so large that they become obtrusive.

Wedding Favour ideas 2016

Whether it be a Tipperary wedding, a Kilkenny wedding, or where ever you’re getting married, it goes without saying that your wedding day is an extremely special occasion and one of the biggest days of your life. Of course, for all brides and grooms, the actual wedding ceremony is the most important part, but sharing your special day with your closest friends and family is also a vital element for a lot of people. It is becoming commonplace for many brides and grooms to recognise the love and friendship of their guests with a small token of their appreciation.
There are literally hundreds of different ideas for wedding favours that you can use, and below is just a small selection. All of these are becoming more frequent at Irish weddings in places such as Tipperary, Kilkenny, Carlow and Waterford. You don’t have to break the bank.
Weddings can be very expensive occasions, and some things such as videography are best handled by a professional such as Abbey Video Productions, due to my extensive experience and knowledge of all the local and distant hotels and my years of wedding videography.

However, when it comes to things such as invitations and wedding favours, there’s no need to hire an expensive wedding planner as it really is the thought that counts. A sweet idea, one of the most popular wedding favours that won’t decimate your wedding budget is sweets and in particular, Love Hearts. They have obvious connotations with love and togetherness and you can customise the wrappers to include your own personal message. Other sweet companies also offer a similar service and, although Love Hearts are arguably the most appropriate, it really is up to the bride and groom to choose which sweets to have – possibly their own favourites.

Favour envelopes are another increasingly popular idea, and anything can be placed in them and left as a surprise for your guests

A photograph or a note of thanks can be especially heartfelt for guests, many of whom may have travelled a long way to be present.
Scented candles are also growing in popularity as a wedding favour and are often found at Irish weddings in Tipperary and Kilkenny in particular. The candles can be personalised with your own unique message or you can buy them ‘off the shelf’, but either way they will create a wonderful aroma in the room and give your guests a lasting memory of the day that they can take home and keep.Of course you can break the bank if you choose to.
While most brides and grooms have a limited budget which they’ll try to stick rigidly to, some couples will be able to lavish expensive wedding favours on their guests. If you can afford to, then why not? Sweets are one thing, but a handmade cake with a personalised message will really impress your guests and they’ll certainly remember the wedding for a long time to come.
Any form of personalised gift will be sure to leave a lasting impression on your guests, and items such as hip flasks, passport holders and wallets can all be customised with a unique message for a real personal touch.

Wedding Speeches your way!

Just filmed 2 wonderful wedding videos in Kilkenny last week-end, both quite local to me. Nicola Gleeson from Killenaule, just a few kms from Cashel, was married to John Cleere, also from Killenaule, in Moyglass Church and the reception was held in the Kilkenny Ormonde Hote. The next day I was in Kilkenny city itself with Kelly and Brandon and their church was St Mary’s Cathedral in the heart of Kilkenny city with reception in Langtons Hotel Kilkenny. This year I am booked for a large amount of wedding videos in the Killenaule and Mullinahone areas with Kilkenny and Tipperary being my main wedding video catchment area. I will also be back to film another wedding in Moyglass / Killenaule this Friday!

At both of these weddings the speeches were held before the meal and I have noticed of late this trend is getting more common. I understand with hotels they have to keep the meal hot while the wedding speeches are being conducted, but from feedback from couples 70% now want their speeches before the meal. This way all involved in the speaking can relalx and enjoy their meal knowing it’s done and dusted! It’s a great idea for people that are not used to public speaking. Of course from the hotel’s side of things this can be a nightmare! The bride and groom tell the hotel they will only be 15 minutes but I have see this 15 mins drag on to an hour! The poor chef is doing his best to stop the veg from sticking to the pans, so i can understand why the hotels frown on this! If your speeches are going to be before the meal tell the hotel this and stay to an agreed time-frame – this way your guests won’t be eating cold food and all will be happy.

The traditional scenario of having the speeches after the meal is fine as well, but think of the groom & best man and also the dads all sitting there eating their meal thinking the speeches have to be done soon – it can and will put them off their meal.

Getting back to recent weddings: Saturday’s wedding reception was in Langtons Hotel in Kilkenny. The couple arrived at the hotel after the photo shoot in Butler House and Kilkenny Castle with their photographer John Delaney Photography. Sean, the manager at the hotel who is a fantastic guy, was happy to see the couple arrive at the hotel early as their speeches were being held before the meal, so this worked out great for all concerned.

Friday’s wedding was in Moyglass and the reception was in the Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel. Again after the church we went to Butler House and Kilkenny Castle for the family photos and their photographer was local man Eamonn McGee from Thurles in Tipperary. Once again when we arrived to the Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel every thing was done with the photographs and this is what the hotel wants when the speeches are before the meal. The couple had time to mingle with their guests, whereas often they don’t get time to meet people until later after the meal. I tend to recommend to couples when they ask to book my wedding videography services here in Kilkenny that they should give themselves about 1 hour with their guests before the meal is served as often I have seen couples arrive to the hotel from the photo session only to be rushed into the dining room as its so late and their plans to have the speeches before the meal have to be abandoned.

My idea of creating a website just for wedding videography services in Kilkenny following feed back for brides and grooms around Kilkenny & Carlow areas has been a huge success for me. Bookings have been pouring in from the areas I have targeted, and of course its a huge thank you to all the couples that have me booked for this year – 2016 – 2017 and I got my first 2 booking for 2018 ! this morning in Kilkenny so happy days there so that’s my little bit of feedback on the site, as one bride said to me today pity some other Wedding videographers did not think of it earlier… well they are to late now !

Now talking about Kilkenny, I filmed a lovely wedding there 2 weeks ago for Kelly O Shea & Brandon Walsh, both Kilkenny people, Kelly admitted she priced and looked at samples of other “video” guys but she loved the way my footage flowed and of course my prices, which was very important to her and everyone these days along with my invisible way of filming their wedding day.

A quick call to Kelly’s home the morning of the wedding which is just across the street from St. Mary’s Cathedral in Kilkenny city was a must, its where the fun begins for me on a wedding day, as everyone is so excited with the make-up people there , the friends and family calling its a real buzz, Kelly kept no one waiting and the day ran like clock work. John Delaney their photographer was all ready there when i arrived, John is a fantastic photographer and also owns Johns photo boot we meet quite a lot at weddings in and around Kilkenny, and of course we both recommend each other to couples which is a great way to network. After the lovely ceremony by Fr Willie Purcell who is great fun and makes every couple relaxed with his approach, o yes and he also commented on how unobtrusive I was …. just thought I get that little bit in there 🙂 we went to Kilkenny castle for the photo shoot and what a day for the Castle grounds , which is rare these days with our Irish weather, we got some lovely walking shots of Kelly and Brandon and where would you be without the famous water feature in the grounds of the castle, As John was taking the last few photographs I made my way to no other than Langtons house hotel in the center of Kilkenny city, where my good friend Sean was on hand with the champagne, Sean is a great guy makes sure all is going smoothly on the day, myself and Sean go back a long way and he always recommends me to couples who is booking their wedding at Langtons if you look at their wedding sheets Wedding video Kilkenny is number one on it for wedding video.

Wedding Video Bookings for 2016 and 2017 are pouring in the last few days. Even January this year was as busy as last July and that’s booked out fully again this year! It’s something I have never encountered before but is great to see. Even 2017 is well booked. Throughout the year, I have had to recommend some well heeled colleagues of mine to brides for whom I was booked for their date. If I am booked, I don’t just send them a name of the first videographer that springs to mind. I have a few professional guys that I hold in the highest regard and we always recommend each other, should one of us be booked. With this way of working, no couple will get the run around with different prices. I would never recommend someone I would not use my self.

The last few weeks has been hectic filming weddings and school shows in and around Tipperary along with Kilkenny and Carlow, This is why I had to defer a brand new editing software until next month which is the most professional in Europe. I have made the big decision to change over to a top of the range MAC. After a lot of research, I have learned that, together, MAC and the new editing software will both provide even more fantastic results to my editing work. It will also make my turn around time even better. Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 software is the best video editing software available my two new top of the range Sony cameras are well in training by now after the few months of hard work and works nearly by themselves

So, with a fantastic looking year ahead and with 80% of my work in and around Tipperary and Kilkenny, I guess I can’t complain. However, with every wedding that I film I try and create a new and unique way of crafting wedding videos and editing. Anyone can give you a wedding video, but I try and make it that bit special. It’s this that has kept me ahead of other other “video guys “, while still offering a Professional Affordable and Unobtrusive service. I got some fantastic news early this morning when I was informed I had reached the finals of the Mrs2Be Brides’ Choice Awards 2015 ( Recognising the best of the Irish wedding industry)! But as I said in an earlier blog it it’s not the winning for me … it would be nice, don’t get me wrong, but every wedding video I film whether it be in Tipperary, Kilkenny, Carlow or any of the multitude of other locations I attend, I always give it 110%. Every bride and groom has different ideas for their wedding video, it may be the music they choose or the way they want it filmed – each couple is unique. So when i am booked for a wedding I put a lot of planning into it well before the day, this way from the bride’s house to the first dance I know what’s expected of me – after all, it’s their day.

The guests arriving is a very important part of filming as this is something the bride only gets to see on DVD later. The music in the church, the service, the vows, the walk down the aisle as husband & wife – these are all key points. With regards to the music in the Church, I like to leave a wireless microphone or a professional voice recorder near the musicians to capture the audio 100%. Sound is just as important as picture, this is why I always use a wireless mic or voice recorder discreetly placed in the groom’s pocket to pick up the vows and this is removed right away outside the door after the ceremony. The greeting line is a great way to formally meet your guests after the wedding.The bride’s house is a great place to start filming, with all the make-up and the hair being done it can be great fun. It’s a part of the day the groom doesn’t get to see so it’s nice for him to be able to view this later on their finished wedding DVD. The groom’s house sometimes gets filmed but this all depends on timing on the day, as i like to be at the ceremony location one hour before it starts – this time is needed to film the location, the flowers and all the little details in the Church or room where the ceremony is taking place.

The photograph session is a fantastic opportunity for me to capture some great video footage. I don’t just film what the photographer is doing but more of a candid covering of the bridal party and their families if they are there as well. If not I will capture them at the hotel. I enjoy filming the guests discreetly in the hotel enjoying the drinks reception, this way i get a great chance to catch up with some late-comers! From there on I film the speeches, which lately tend to take place before the meal – it’s nice to relax and enjoy your meal once they are over and done with! The dancing is filmed discreetly with no light if possible or just a small light on the camera if I need it. Your wedding will end with a highlights chapter looking back over your day.
We have often been complimented on our turn-around time – we try to have the finished product ready when the couple return from honeymoon. I have read and heard of other couples not receiving their wedding DVDs for months, this can happen where only one person is working on a project and gets snowed under.It doesn’t end there… now the hard work starts! The editing can take two days to to complete, but my wife Breda is a pro at this: various effects, titles, adding music, authoring and chaptering the final product, testing design sleeves for the covers of the boxes and the art work on the discs – it’s easy to see where two days goes here!
