Wedding Speeches 2021 … Long or Short ?

Wedding videographer Kilkenny

Over the years in the videography business here in Kilkenny and Tipperary  I have heard it all, with wedding speeches anyway!  I remember 15 years ago at weddings, the Smokey hotel function rooms and the speeches that were short and to the point. As time went on the smoking ban arrived and the speeches got longer & longer for some reason.

weddingvideokilkenny.comHow long is a good speech? Well I guess the way to answer that is how long in a piece of string… who knows, but the attention span of your guests should not be over looked.  The total duration of the wedding speeches is usually 20 to 30 minutes max.  If you want your wedding speeches to be short, then you have to make sure all the speakers know their limits and no more.  Long speeches can risk  repetition and guest boredom and I have see this while videoing weddings all over Ireland.

My advice to couples that ask about what I think regarding speeches is this: I tell them it’s their day but just to be aware a short speech is always remembered and spoken about later, a long speech is soon forgotten because it was too much for people to take in.  Also bear in mind that if the speeches are after the meal and are long winded, people get fed up as they need to stretch their legs.  I have heard horror comments after the speeches from guests after sitting for nearly an hour listening to a guy that “loves his own voice!” but as I emphasise – it’s your day and your speeches. The traditional scenario of having the speeches after the meal is fine as well, but think of the groom & best man and also the dads  all  sitting there eating their meal thinking the speeches have to be done soon – it can and will put them off their meal.

A trend that is becoming increasingly popular is to have the wedding speeches before the meal. This really helps people who have a speech to deliver and are somewhat anxious about making it. This will have to be  arranged with your hotel in advance so that they can  Plan to accommodate it with your meal.

drinks at wedding

I understand with hotels they have to keep the meal hot while the wedding speeches are being conducted, but from feedback from couples 70% now want their speeches before the meal. This way all involved in the speaking  can relax and enjoy their meal knowing it’s done and dusted! It’s a great idea for  people that are not used to public speaking. Of course from the hotel’s side of things this can be a nightmare! Also you band can start on time if all is done and dusted before say 9pm, and this way you get value for money from you nights Entertainment as well. The bride and groom tell the hotel they will only be 15 minutes but I have see this 15 mins drag on to an hour!  The poor chef is doing his best to stop the veg from sticking to the pans, so i can understand why the hotels frown on this!  If your speeches are going to be before the meal tell the hotel this and stay to an agreed time-frame – this way your guests won’t be eating cold food and all will be happy. Brand new blog in the making for next week, very interesting one at that!  check back   ~  Joe

How To Distribute Your Wedding Video To People Who Couldn’t Attend Your Wedding

Wedding video KIlkenny - Abbey videoHow To Distribute Your Wedding Video To People Who Couldn’t Attend Your Wedding

Whether we are covering weddings in Tipperary, Kilkenny, Carlow or Waterford, we understand a wedding day is the most important event in the life of most brides to be. This is perfectly normal, so nobody can blame you for wanting this day to be perfect even in the smallest details. Unfortunately, some of your friends and family members may not be able to join you to celebrate your big day together. Perhaps they are busy, perhaps they travel for business or they are sick. Whatever their reasons for not attending your wedding ceremony, this doesn’t mean they don’t want to see your wedding photos and videos.

Wedding video KIlkenny - Abbey videoThese being said, you probably want to find a way to share your wedding video with all people who couldn’t attend your ceremony. Luckily, there are several ways you can do it, without too much hassle. The first method is to set up a YouTube channel and upload your video there, and then share the link with all your friends and family. They would need an internet connection in order to be able to watch your movie.

Wedding video KIlkenny - Abbey videoYou also have another option that would enable them to watch the film offline. You can use a file sharing website to upload your file, and then send an email with the download link to all people you want to access your video. They have to download the file, but once they’ve done it, they can watch the video without needing an internet connection. However, this method requires them to have enough storage space on their computer or mobile device to download and store the video.

Wedding video KIlkenny - Abbey videoIf you want, you can also upload your video to Facebook. However, you have to check the maximum file size they accept. The other drawback is that your friends need to have a Facebook account in order to be able to access your video. Nonetheless, there are very few people who aren’t on Facebook these days, so this might not be such a big problem. Speaking of Facebook, you could also make use of their live broadcast opportunity to address a few words to all your friends who couldn’t attend it, straight from the venue. You may even want to start your broadcast just before the most important moment of the day, the moment when both of you are going to make your vows.

brides_choice_awards_nominated_badge_200x151Last but not least, if you hire a professional photographer and filmmaker for your wedding, you can ask them to create a special page on their website, and upload your photos and videos there. Many photographers offer this service to their clients anyway, so you might even receive it as part of your agreed wedding package.

Whatever method you choose, all people who weren’t able to attend your wedding are going to have access to your videos. They are going to watch you in your most important day, feeling as if they were there, in the same room with you and with all other guests. Modern technology is wonderful, so use it to your advantage!

Wedding video KIlkenny - Abbey videoSo what ever way you might like to share your wedding day with family and friends that cant make it on the day, give me a call and I will be glad help you with the options out there.  ~ Joe

Only the best for your wedding

Over the years how things has changed ….

Wedding Videos Tipperary

Hi all, and welcome to this month’s wedding blog. I’m Joe at Abbey Video Productions.

When I started wedding videos here in Tipperary and Kilkenny, the cameras were BIG with a large cassette in. Thankfully, those times have passed and technology has moved on. My new cameras are Sony pxw- x180s. These cameras are so easy to carry, are lightweight and have much more flexibility. They are also much less obtrusive which is very important on a wedding day.

Wedding Videos Kilkenny

The use of SxS mem cards means less storage space is needed, and drop out from the old VHS tapes are long gone. HIGH quality is very important to me as a videographer here in Tipperary and Kilkenny, along with low lighting. Capability is a must, as no one likes a video light; again these days are gone.

Editing systems : Where do I start? And do you really need to know all the technology of it? Probably not! But let me give you a quick overview. I use two editing systems — Vegas Pro 13 and, of course, the old faithful Pinnacle Studio 14 HD for smaller projects. The editing system is only as good as the camera person: If your shots are not framed right or are shaky, no editing system will fix it 100%. So that’s where expertise in filming comes into play. But, of course, what’s a wedding video without a few nice, gentle special effects. That being said, I don’t like to overdo them, as they look tacky. I have seen some wedding videos with butterflies floating around the screen, or some gold dust falling over the bride as she walks in a park … tacky!

Whats new out there I hear you ask:

Wedding Videos KilkennyWell its not new, but  Flash drives with your full wedding along with chapters have  now been in for a while I have delivered some weddings on them and the quality is fantastic, but not every household  has a  TVs with a flash drive slot so the good old DVD is here for a while yet, but the Flash drives will soon be our main format for delivery The reason is that it will allow us to supply your wedding footage  in  broadcast high definition quality, all my weddings are recorded  with the very latest Sony pxw- x180 cameras so its time to make the change and let couples really enjoy better than 100% quality.

Where can this all happen:

While I am based in Tipperary, but I also have a huge clientele in Kilkenny, Carlow, Waterford, Wexford, and everywhere around Ireland, really you could find me anywhere.

Tipperary is, of course, my local area and I love local weddings. It’s great to be asked back to film a wedding for a family that I have all ready worked for. That’s ‘word of mouth’ and the BEST way to do business. Kilkenny is my next area, as it was in the Kilkenny/Carlow area that I filmed one of my first weddings. Only last week, I was in Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow with the reception in  Mount Wolseley   but, as I said, I love to film. So wherever your wedding is, give me a call and let’s chat about your special day. After all, I do have the experience.

Till debt do us part / wedding videography

Till debt do us part /  wedding videography

Wedding Video Kilkenny - abbey videoIts a short piece  of writing for you  this week as i’m so busy between, weddings, editing, for every county around especially  Tipperary & Kilkenny  but its all local work so all is good! But I  found this last week and thought it might make some interesting reading, Over the years of filming wedding videos in Tipperary / Kilkenny  and all over Ireland I get to see some  fantastic wedding days, from the Engagement party  right up to when the bride and groom dance the night away with family and friends on the big day. Its a pleasure to be part  of a couples wedding day to be among their family’s and friends for quite a number of hours on the day and some times for the Engagement party! But I did write a little about wedding and the way they change over the years but this post touches on the prices, which in these times is a BIG factor with all the costs so have a read and please comment and give me your thoughts.

Wedding Video Kilkenny | Abbey video productionsThe web: The web is now the main part and plays a huge part for couples planning their wedding , Google is a great friend to all to find wedding suppliers, get prices, information, and try and get some help with that dreaded  speech. Google even has a wedding planning site to help you with your wedding you can see it here , even for  us wedding suppliers Google and the web is a powerful tool to have at our fingertips, when you type in wedding video Tipperary orKilkenny I am number one in the Organic search for wedding videos, this I am very proud of !  so get clicking and find you wedding suppler in your local area. They say you can’t put a price on wedded bliss, but €24,000 is a start. Yes, this is the amount that the average couple spent on getting married last year. There are several reasons for this, including the honeymoon, venue and décor. Here are a few other interesting facts about the change in trends for the big day:

 Engagement:

Wedding-Video-KilkennyThe length of time for which a couple are engaged has become shorter. In 2012, most couples were engaged for at least 2 years before getting married. However, last year, the majority waited just 13-18 months. As well as this, almost one in four couples live together for at least five years before walking up the aisle. On average, brides are getting married in their late twenties, while grooms are in their early thirties.

Winter Wedding:

Wedding video Kilkenny - Abbey videoDecember is now the most popular month to get engaged, with February following behind.Abbey Video  have filmed some lovely Weddings over the years, the lovely crisp light, the shadows and the frosty blue skies. The hotels ready for Christmas with their decorations, and of course the mulled wine.

Walking Up the Aisle:

wedding videos in Tipperary / KilkennyAlthough up to a quarter of couples shun a church wedding, it is still the most popular venue in which to hold a wedding.  In years gone by Churches were the place to get wed now you can  get married anywhere you like to a certain extent, and it’s nice for people that are not religious  to have this choice.

Speeches:

Wedding Videographers | Kilkenny 2015

Even though it is still the main preference to have the speeches after the meal, popularity is increasing for having the speeches before the meal as everyone is more relaxed and can enjoy their dinner better.  Speeches they say should be like a mini skirt… long enough to cover the  essentials  but short enough to keep you interested, and it’s true, people do tend to want to get up after a large feed and walk around a bit before the dancing starts, but if your speeches go on too long  it’s hard to keep them entertained. The typical number of guests sitting for the meal is 101-150, with an approximate price range of €35 – €60 per head.  ( I remember doing a video a few years back and there were 380 sitting down for the meal!

Reception Venue:

Civil Partnership ceremony
Civil Partnership Kilkeny

Although hotels remain the top choice for couples as their wedding reception venue, other choices are available and popular among couples.  These include country houses, which host more than 20 percent of Irish weddings, as well as restaurants.  We have some fantastic hotels here in Tipperary with the likes of Clonmel Park,  Hotel Minella Clonmel, Raheen House,  then just over the border in Kilkenny you have  The Newpark Hotel, the Ormond Hotel, and a lot more.

“How much”, I hear you ask?   read on ……..

They tell us an average wedding cost €24,000

Ok so what costs  all this money?  Well below is the average amount spent on various aspects of a wedding:

Venue : €9,825

Band: €1,850

DJ : €350

Photographer: €1,435

Videographer : €850

Wedding dress:  €1,570

Bridesmaid dresses : €550

Suits : €626

Ceremony music: €415

Wedding car: €420

Make up €265

Hair and others  €235

Jewellery €510

Wedding cake : €340

Flowers  €615

Favours €225

Candles €125

Hen / Stag : €500

Honeymoon: €4950

Extras : €1,170

And don’t think you will be finished with just the above, as your wedding day draws near there is always some thing that crops up, so make a budget and stick to it!

Hope you enjoyed my post ~  Joe on facebook

Civil Ceremony Alternatives;

Wedding video Tipperary & Kilkenny abbey video

After All, Your Big Day Deserves more than the Registrar’s Office.
Getting married is one of life’s biggest events and every couple wants it to be as memorable as possible for all the right reasons.
Now of course there is nothing wrong with a traditional civil ceremony and after all, the most important part of the day is the actual marriage itself, although, I have filmed a lot of Civil ceremony’s In and around Tipperary and Kilkenny and getting hitched in a registrar’s office may not be the most romantic of settings or the day you’ve always dreamed of. Your wedding is something that you (hopefully) will only be doing once so it’s worth making that extra effort to ensure the day is as special and unique to you as possible. The following alternative ceremonies will give you a brief idea of how you can make the day that little bit more special.

Wedding video Tipperary & Kilkenny - abbey video productions
Wedding video Tipperary & Kilkenny

The Possibilities are endless there are now more ways than ever for brides and grooms to mark their special day and these alternative ceremonies are becoming ever more popular around the world and especially in Ireland
A ‘knot tying’ ceremony
One of the most unique alternatives is known as a ‘knot-tying’ ceremony. Here, the couple can demonstrate their combined strength by tying a fisherman’s knot. Getting tighter with pressure this knot is meant to signify a couple’s strength. Ideally the material used in this ceremony should have some significance, for example a strip of cloth from the dress that the bride wore on the first date if possible. Every ceremony is unique so it is entirely up to the happy couple but this is certainly one idea which is becoming more popular.
Other alternatives

Anner Hotel Thurles
Anner Hotel Thurles

Another alternative which is becoming increasingly popular is a sand ceremony. In this ceremony, the couple mix two different colours of sand into one container which symbolises their hearts and lives becoming entwined. The fact that it is extremely difficult to separate the two colours once they have been mixed is also highly significant as this is a reflection of the couple being joined together and unable to be separated.
A water ceremony works in much the same way as a sand ceremony with each partner having a container of coloured water which is unique to them and then pouring it into one joint container, therefore symbolising unity and togetherness.

A Lasting Memento
As your wedding day is such a unique and special occasion it is well worth having a memento which will last forever and I can make that memory last forever so no matter where your getting married let it be  Tipperary, Kilkenny, Carlow or Waterford or anywhere in Ireland my packages are designed to suit you in terms of style and budget. Videography companies like Abbey Video Productions have experience in recording all manner of ceremonies, indoors and outdoors and in various locations so wherever your ceremony takes place, I can record it without any problems.

Well I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas, and a lovely time with family and friends as I did.  Wedding Video Bookings for 2016 are pouring in the last few days. Even January this year is as busy as July! It’s something I have never encountered before but is great to see. Even  2017  is well booked at the moment and  2018 is starting already. Throughout the year, I have had to recommend some well heeled colleagues of mine to brides for whom I was booked for their date. If I am booked, I don’t just send them a name of the first  videographer that springs to mind. I have a few professional guys that I hold in the highest regard and we always recommend each other, should one of us be booked. With this way of working, no couple will get the run around with different prices. I would never recommend someone I would not use my self.

Tomorrow  its back to work  with my first wedding of this mad busy time of year is in  Tipperary town tomorrow,  Tuesday is Inch near Thurles and then on to  Kilkenny and to the the fantastic Lyrath hotel.  And of course New Years eve is a very popular choice with couples all over Ireland Solohead just a few miles from me is where you will find me that day, its great to be local this time of year. While looking back on last year, Dundrum House Hotel In Tipperary which is with with great sadness has been damaged by fire earlier this year was one of my most visited wedding reception areas along with Clonmel Park Hotel   Hotel Minella, ClonmelHotel Kilkenny , New park hotel  Kilkenny  I also visited Cork, Waterford and Limerick. Thank You | Kilkenny videographers

Also I got  many thank you cards over  Christmas from couples whose weddings I have filmed over the year, with 80%  of them from around Tipperary where most of my work is.  It’s great to get feedback from brides, it shows we are doing a great job and they enjoyed their wedding DVDs.

Wedding videography is a record of your day the way you would like it told, and along with our  camera skills and editing this can be achieved.  No wedding is the same and any videographer that goes out to do a job should never treat it like “yesterdays wedding” –  every couple has different ideas of what they think their wedding video should look and feel like and  I love to hear this, because it gives me a clear picture of what they are seeing.  When the day arrives I keep this in mind, and work to achieve it.

So Happy New year to you all. and If your planing on ” tieing the knot” or you know someone who is, give me a call I can guarantee you wont be disappoint  in price or quality   ( All photos  © Wedding videographers Kilkenny )

Thank YouWell, it’s that time of year again, when I look back and say a big thank you to all my customers, and of course my friends the wedding suppliers we have met throughout the year, and, of course to the hotels that have looked after us and feed us along the way. It’s been a great year for weddings, along with other video work. This time of the year, it’s school show after school show most nights of the week! Cashel. Tipperary Town, Clonmel schools, Shows in Kilkenny of course and of course a few in Waterford. It’s great to see the pupils perform, both for the camera and, of course, their teachers and parents. Each year, it’s great to get the phone call or the e-mail opening with “Please, Joe, tell us you’re free to video our show again this year. The parents and the children are still raving about last year’s production you captured for us, so, it’s a job well done!” and the  nice part is I never had to go chase a job, below is just a little Christmas jingle I uploaded enjoy…

Getting back to weddings over 2015. All of my weddings were local to me this year. When I say local, I mean Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford, Limerick ,and not forgetting, Tipperary. 80% were from recommendations and it’s great to be called back to the same family for their son’s or daughter’s wedding along the way. I have been very fortunate with my results on Google of late, being number one for wedding videos. Tipperary and Kilkenny !  It’s not easy getting time to blog and to make samples with all the editing and filming, but as I say on my page it costs me nothing to to send out a full demo to a couple which I do 95% of the time, this way the couple can see and get a feel for my work in its full glory and not a special made up snippet you might see on a website, my full wedding demos are FULL weddings, with full permission of the couple involved, not a 4 min highlight of a bight sunny day!  My wife and special effects editor, Breda, makes sure all the weddings I film are ready for the couple when they arrive back from honeymoon, I hear horror story’s regarding other videographers not having a wedding video ready for months after the wedding! I feel its very unfair to the couple that has paid for a service and have to wait that long… these guys seem a bit bogged down to me! The same with my shows, only last year I filmed a Christmas show in Newport 3 days before they got their Christmas Holidays Breda starting editing it the morning after and I was making copy’s and boxing the DVDs that night to deliver the next day, and of course I was called back to film this years show next Wednesday night   That’s the great thing about working as a team, ths  way, it’s fresh in their minds and they can relive it all over again with family and friends over the Christmas holidays well I like to say…  When you’re professional you’re professional, and that’s the way to do business.

It’s a short post, as I said. We have a lot of editing to get on with, and my DVD copy towers are spinning away behind me as I type. So, Merry Christmas to you and your family. “Typical Irish Weather”

“Typical Irish Weather” How to Deal with Rain on your Wedding Day

Wedding Video Kilkenny
Wedding Video Kilkenny

Your wedding day is without doubt one of the biggest days of your life, if not the biggest. However, there’s one thing which can spoil it and that’s the unpredictable Irish weather, particularly in areas such as Tipperary, Kilkenny, Carlow and Waterford.

Whatever you do, don’t let a rainy day put a dampener on your start to married life. For all you blushing brides and dashing grooms out there, here are just a few tips to stop the typical Irish weather from spoiling your big day.

Preparation is key

Of course there is nothing you can do to prevent the rain but there are a few steps you can take to prepare for it. Unfortunately everywhere in Ireland is susceptible to high rainfall, even beautiful wedding location such as Tipperary and Kilkenny. As a famous Cork man once said, “ fail to prepare, prepare to fail”, never is this more true than on your wedding day.
Here are a few steps you can take to prepare properly for the day you tie the knot.

Check the weather forecast well in advance and advise your guests

Wedding Video Kilkenny

It’s your special day so people won’t mind a bit of rain but do give them some warning if possible. If there’s a high chance of it bucketing down, let your guest know so they can dress accordingly. The last thing you want is all your friends and family drowned to the bone with no umbrellas or jackets to be seen.

Relax and embrace it

Try to relax and not get worked up. This may not sound like great advice but a wedding day is stressful enough without having the added worry of the weather to think about. Just take a few deep breaths, remind yourself that there was always a possibility of rain and embrace it. Try to imagine the raindrops being the perfect backdrop to your special day rather than something that spoils it. It wouldn’t be Ireland without a bit of rain, right?

Trust the experts

Wedding Videographers | Kilkenny 2015

A rainy wedding certainly isn’t ideal but the professionals that you hire for the day will have covered hundreds of weddings in all manner of conditions so trust them to do a great job regardless of the weather.

Videography professionals such as Abbey Video Productions are used to working in all weather conditions in locations like Tipperary, Kilkenny, Carlow and Waterford. They will be well prepared and able to confidently handle any challenges that the weather may present.

Have a Plan B

If your guests are getting soaked and you can’t stand another second of having an umbrella hovering over your head for the entire day then perhaps it is time to head inside. Try to ensure that your venue has an indoor area that you would be happy to use as the backdrop for your photographs and videography. After all, it is one thing to embrace the rain, but it’s another thing entirely to be getting soaked to the skin and rained on for the entirety of your big day. If there is an indoor alternative at the venue then do ensure it is ready for use if necessary.

It’s all about the bride and groom

wedding video kilkenny

Just remember it is your special day and the only thing that your guests and the professionals such as the musicians, the Abbey Video Productions team and the venue staff want is to see is the bride and groom enjoying it. Do your best to be thorough in your preparations and you will definitely have a day to remember.

All the frills for your wedding

Kilkenny Wedding Videographers
                      Kilkenny Wedding Videographers

Over the years of filming wedding videos in Kilkenny/Carlow, and of course my own county of Tipperary, I guess you could say I have seen it all! The poor old Celtic tiger weddings were great for all the frills, helicopters, BIG chocolate fountains (and I mean big ones!), 300+ at the weddings, fifty-Euro notes being thrown in over the counter at a bemused bartender, with the owner of the 50 shouting ‘Take it all out of that!’ The honeymoon had to last 4-5 weeks – and they were gone further than Tramore! Wedding cars traveling to weddings the length and breadth of Ireland. The same with wedding bands; how many times have I asked the band members where they were from – Dublin was the answer most of the time. The task of getting these suppliers from all over the country was not an issue, nor was the cost….

Well, someone ate that tiger as you know. But as the last few years leveled out, people getting married learned how to budget all over again. Well maybe no harm was done there. I wont say things were gone mad; people were gone mad. So, with things improving some – so we are told by our leaders – but not a lot, people can now see where they stand. And I don’t mean at the alter, but what they can afford.

Of course, you have to enjoy your wedding day after all the planning. But, in recent years I have come across lots of little details that the bride & groom had made, such as a simple tree branch to hold the names of the guests with their table number on it. I saw a great one lately in the New Park Hotel Kilkenny – an old suit case with all the guests names in it, but mixed up, and it was handed around to pick out their names they had great fun in the bar doing this.

But it’s great to see the old chocolate fountain back. It’s a great treat for all, as was the one last week in the Lakeside Hotel in Killaloe. The chocolate fountain was in full swing; the usual chocolate covered  kids, and there’s always a few guys licking their fingers and trying to get the mess off their ties. We cant forget the sweet cart: Where would the adults – I mean the kids – be without a wedding sweet cart? Another great little treat, and even on more tighter budget times, the sweet cart made its way to 80% of weddings I have filmed.

The honeymoon: Well as I said Tramore is out of the question this time of year! But the Cayman Islands, I hear, is the top spot to be seen in at the moment. So after all the years of planning your wedding, it’s the place to be spoiled, and I believe the weather can be good there 🙂  The second choice among the couples is a jaunt to Florida, a Caribbean Cruise & New York City – ladies, don’t forget Macy’s. Nice one!

So here’s to more stable times, well planned weddings, keep to the budget, and have a fab day!
